WARNING: INCOMING RANT; Unsubstantiated Rumor: EA to Charge $80 for Next-Gen Titles

An interesting rumor was brought to my attention today by a friend of mine and seems to be spreading like wildfire. The title to the video he sent me was EA $80 WTF ???? You lost your Dam Mind !!!!!! $80 for Ps4 , Xbox One games.

The lack of correct spelling and punctuation should have tipped me off, but I thought, “$80? That’s a hefty price jump. I ought to check this out and see if it’s legit.”

So I click the link and listen to his profanity-filled tirade about how EA are money-grubbing bastards, how dare they, etc. and I see in the description to the video that he had a source cited.

I continued my investigative journalism and read the source in question, and at one point the article reads:

"Also bear in mind that if EA are increasing their retail prices in the UK, it also means that they are almost certain to do it in the US as well. £55 translates to around $80, but it is slightly ridiculous to think that EA would have the guts to charge consumers $80 for PS4 and Xbox One games in the US when Sony and Microsoft will be charging $60 for their first-party games."

This article also cited a source to a FAQ from the British games retailer GAME. In this FAQ, I’m assuming everyone is jumping to conclusions due to this bit:

“How much will PlayStation 4 games cost?

At present, the only publisher to confirm costs of their next generation games are EA, attaching a price of £54.99. No other game prices have been confirmed. We will of course update our listings as and when this happens. And if the price changes before release day, you will always pay the lowest price.”

This is all for people to get in on another bandwagon to be pissed off about something. Granted, EA is far from the most beloved company in the world, but I find this whole thing to be bullshit for the following reasons:

  1. The European market has always paid more for games. This has been going on since at least the original Nintendo era in gaming. For many years, the European market got about half the releases the U.S. market did and still to this day pays ridiculous mark-ups for the releases they do get, and

  2. The pricing for the consoles as is. Using the PS4 as an example, at E3 Sony said that the PS4 would launch at $399, €399, and £349 respectively. $399 does not equal €399 or £349. The conversion rate would be as follows (at time of writing):

  • €399 -> $524.21

  • £349 -> $531.60

So applying the logic of the frenzied mob, we should also be paying an extra $130 or so for the consoles here.

I’m not saying this isn’t a possibility, but as of right now it is a completely unsubstantiated rumor that is just another reason for people to be pissed off at EA. I checked many of the videos on YouTube in reaction to this “news” (just type EA $80 in the search bar) and they all have the same source listed from the links above.

Instead of seeing the words UP THE PRICE, $80, and EA and going off, try reading the article first and getting your facts straight before spouting off all over YouTube.

Or at least hate them for something they did do.
