WARNING: INCOMING RANT; Predictable Gamers are Predictable; Kiefer Sutherland as the New Snake

One of the big stories from Konami’s pre recorded E3 press release today was the fact that Kiefer Sutherland will be playing the voice of Snake in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.

As such with the typical “change is bad attitude” that most gamers have, the comments section on any article involving this topic is filled with vitriolic nonsense about how David Hayter is the real Snake, this isn’t going to be good, I’m so mad that Kojima decided to change something with HIS property that he owes me nothing for.

Speaking on the Good Talk Podcast last night, I mentioned that many gamers feel entitled. It is this very entitled attitude that will compel a gamer to go on a comment section on an article related to news like a new voice actor for a character and say “OH MEH GAWD! WORST GAME EVAR!” before they even hear Sutherland’s voice acting or they even see anything more than one trailer for the game.

To add to the intrigue of this situation, David Hayter seems like he might be legitimately upset that Kojima didn’t ask him to voice Snake this time around.

Shortly after the announcement, on Twitter Hayter announced that he was disappointed but he couldn’t fault Sutherland for landing the role. He also said Metal Gear Solid V maybe a smash hit like New Coke.

Whether this dig is legitimate malice, or if Hayter is participating with Kojima an elaborate troll on the fans (which they seem to want to believe) we will certainly have to wait till the release of the game proper to see.

I believe this could be a legitimate theory since Big Boss is getting older in the storyline. It stands to reason, especially if they’re reaching the point in the story line were Big Boss retakes command of Foxhound that Solid Snake could be introduced in this game as a young recruit.

Kojima has also mentioned before that we are not yet done with Solid Snake as a character.

Either way, as mentioned in a previous article I believe this change to be a good thing. It could be a bad thing, I don’t know that yet, but I’m excited for the new Metal Gear regardless of who will be playing the voice of Solid Snake.

When the time comes, if it turns out that this was a bad decision Kojima can rectify it by recasting Hayter as Snake in future installments, but Lord knows, many die-hard fans may jump ship just because of one voice actor and miss out on possibly a great game.

And that’s just ridiculous.
